Project overview
Canal captures the energy and atmosphere of industrial fabrication within a contemporary Clerkenwell setting, transforming a white box unit into a space that expresses both process and precision. Drawing on the client’s manufacturing base in Nottingham, the design introduces raw steel elements that evoke the physicality of welding, cutting and assembly, while maintaining the clarity required of a high-spec showroom. Cantilevered staircases are used as focal points, presenting stages of bespoke manufacture as part of the spatial experience. The space is organised to support product display, client engagement and training, creating a working environment that communicates Canal’s engineering expertise while operating as a functional London base.

Materiality
Raw steel linings inserted within the existing shell bring weight and texture that reference a factory setting. These rougher materials are balanced with precisely crafted secondary elements in brass, timber and frameless glass, introducing contrast and a higher level of finish appropriate to a showroom context. Laser-cut openings within the steel surfaces emit a soft glow, recalling the sparks of the welding process and adding a subtle layer of movement and detail. Together, these elements create an interior that reflects both the making and the finished quality of Canal’s products.

Performance
The space is designed to function as both a showroom and an operational base, supporting client interaction, product demonstration and training within a single environment. The layout allows for clear circulation around large-scale elements such as staircases, ensuring they can be experienced as objects while remaining fully integrated within the space. Display areas are carefully coordinated with workspace and training zones, allowing the showroom to adapt to different modes of use throughout the day. Lighting is calibrated to highlight materials and craftsmanship, ensuring products are presented with clarity while maintaining a consistent overall atmosphere. This flexibility enables the space to operate effectively as both a commercial and educational setting.
