Project overview

Fenwick Newcastle reframes the department store frontage as an active threshold between retail and city life. Following detailed historical and functional analysis, the project responds to the building’s layered evolution by re-establishing clarity, permeability, and engagement at street level. New entrances, internal atria, and a renewed shopfront strategy strengthen the relationship between the store and the pedestrianised retail district, improving orientation, footfall, and visibility. The design balances heritage sensitivity with commercial performance, supporting Fenwick’s long-term reinvigoration while reinforcing its role as a social and cultural anchor in the city centre.

By centralising entrances within fully transparent curved glass façades along Northumberland Street, the design aims to improve footfall and the store’s engagement with the public realm.

Design strategy

A continuous horizontal canopy unifies the full length of the Northumberland Street façade, reasserting a clear architectural language across previously fragmented frontages. Centralised entrances reintroduce permeability and restore a strong visual connection between interior activity and the street. Curved glazed elements reference historic storefront typologies while supporting a more fluid and experiential entry sequence. The shopfront shifts from a surface to pass by into a space that draws pedestrians in, strengthening engagement with the surrounding public realm.

Ben Mailen

Architect & Managing Director
“The renovation of such a significant building was a very special opportunity for the practice. Adopting an analytical approach to research and context was key to proposing a solution that would celebrate Fenwick Newcastle’s heritage while allowing it to continue supporting the city’s community.”
Relocating Fenwick’s main access points to Northumberland Street allowed its other frontages to be reimagined as bustling pedestrian hubs with additional retail and outdoor dining areas.

Materiality

Material and colour choices translate Fenwick’s brand identity into architectural form. Industrial references drawn from the region’s heritage inform the robust metal canopy and crafted detailing, while subtle motifs derived from Fenwick’s logo are integrated into the façade. The signature Fenwick green is reinterpreted through a dichromatic finish that responds to changing light and viewpoint, creating depth and variation without spectacle. Together, these elements establish a cohesive architectural and brand language that is recognisable, confident, and grounded in place.
