Project overview
Weald House offers a contemporary interpretation of the traditional black agricultural barn that blends minimalist design with a refined material palette. Positioned carefully in one corner of the site, a solid front approach in the local vernacular enhances privacy, while extensive glazing along the south façade provides sweeping views of the meadow and surrounding woodland. Designed to support family entertaining and quieter everyday use, the home’s L-shaped layout places a voluminous open plan kitchen, dining and living space with airy mezzanine in the heart of the plan, with private rooms tucked quietly into linear wings. Strategically positioned windows and rooflights bring natural light deep into the residence, enhancing the interplay of light and shadow throughout the day.

Materiality
Black timber cladding wraps the building to form a unified volume that references local agricultural structures and responds to neighbouring historic barns. Each board varies subtly in depth and profile, introducing tactility and shadow across the façade. A black zinc pitched roof crowns the house, detailed with a fine edge that conceals rainwater gutters while extending deep eaves for shelter and solar control. Internally, large-format light grey porcelain tiles ground the open-plan living spaces, paired with chalk-painted walls that allow landscape views and changing light to take prominence. A blackened steel kitchen island anchors the heart of the home, complemented by oak joinery, concealed storage, and a concrete fire surround that introduces weight and focus without ornament.

Sustainability
The house operates predominantly off-grid, supported by forty-five solar panels and two air source heat pumps that significantly reduce reliance on external energy sources. The extended pitched roof regulates internal temperatures seasonally while enabling rainwater harvesting into subterranean tanks. High levels of insulation, careful orientation, and the considered placement of rooflights and glazing maximise daylight and reduce energy demand throughout the year. Addressing sustainability through performance, longevity, and integration ensures the house responds responsibly to its landscape while supporting comfortable, flexible family living for years to come.

Client testimonial
“Hewn saw our vision, sincerely understood what we were trying to achieve and gave us ideas that inspired us. The result is a home that is completely personal to us; supporting the way we want to live and allowing us to have an intimate dialogue with the surrounding natural landscape.”
